Why is it that so many people don't seem to get it? I mean that it's fun to be a grown up; that the fine art of playing is every bit as important as the other skills we learn throughout life. Playing doesn't have to be going outside and throwing balls around ,or chasing the wind in a sailboat, or climbing into your favourite toy. It can also be a state of mind induced by singing while doing the dishes ,or listening to Leonard Cohen while you're ironing and belting out the chorus to "Closing Time." |
I consider myself a Play Expert. Traveling is definitely way up there in the Fine Arts. When you travel, the world becomes intense, the slate is clean for you to write yourself a new part, routine is gone and new days get to be coloured in in whatever colours you want to choose. Travel may be the closest we can get to immortality, as one day on the road is definitely equal to a year at the same routine. When you allow yourself to be vulnerable in a strange place, you allow things to come to you: insights, friendship, tastes, understanding. Your skin is sensitive again, your senses revived. Whether it's cycling on my own beautiful Gulf Islands, or on the Hebrides or hiking in the Cascades, or sailing in Desolation Sound on British Columbia's west coast, or going overland from China to Tibet by train and bus, or watching the eclipse of the sun in Cornwall, or heading north to see the Northern Lights, travel in all its forms tantalizes and teases my soul. It teaches me patience, tolerance, humility - three qualities in which I need constant schooling. It answers my questions and asks me new ones.
I love to travel, and I love to write about it. |
